LinkedIn Invites

I'm adding science & skeptic contacts from other venues to my LinkedIn account, as a reference for what skills I can offer. Primarily this is for volunteer & pro bono projects, but I'm also looking at future paying positions. Just a heads up for folks who may be wondering why I'm sending connection invites.

Maple-Bacon-Bourbon-Coffee

4 oz coffee
2 oz bourbon
1 oz dark maple syrup
1/2 tsp bacon syrup (max 1 tsp)

Fill a 20-30 oz cocktail shaker 1/4 full with crushed ice. Add ingredients in listed order, shake thoroughly (at least 30-60 seconds). Pour straight into pint glass without straining. If you've done it right, what you'll get looks a lot like a freshly pulled draft stout. The foam is really stable, you may need a spoon to finish it off.

Bacon syrup: Available via Torani or World Market.

Rum-Spiked Chocolate Milk aka The Black Death

So I promised folks on Twitter that I'd post the recipe for this, but the ingredients are bit less common than my usual, so I'm doing it long form here.
1) 4 oz. chocolate milk - I used Silk brand chocolate almond milk. It has a very rich chocolate flavor without being too sweet. If you want to make something similar with regular milk, use whole milk and a quality cocoa mix like Ghirardelli Double Chocolate.
2) 2 oz. Kraken Spiced Rum - tastes great, not expensive. No actual giant squid were harmed.
3) 2 oz. Black Blood of the Earth coffee extract - OK, here's where you definitely want to think about substituting. While BBotE is wonderful stuff, it's really pricey and not easy to get. If you can get unsweetened coffee extract (hard to find outside of Rhode Island), go with that. Otherwise, make it yourself - America's Test Kitchen has a write-up of a process most people can do at home without much extra investment. The extract will keep in the refrigerator for about a week, and is less acidic than hot brew coffee.
4) 0.5 oz of sugar cane syrup - I use Petit Canne syrup, mostly because it's what my local liquor store carries. Cane syrup has a flavor profile about half-way between plain simple syrup and caramel, and the strong flavors of the other ingredients requires something with a bit more authority.
At this point, you can just mix all the ingredients in a glass and add ice, or blend in a cocktail shaker with ice. The shaker will give you a nice froth on top of the drink. If you are using Black Blood of the Earth, be careful. Two ounces was enough to keep me up until 2 am, after drinking this at 8:30 pm.

H.P. Lovecraft "Drinking Song From The Tomb"

Come hither, my lads, with your tankards of ale,
And drink to the present before it shall fail;
Pile each on your platter a mountain of beef,
For 'tis eating and drinking that bring us relief:
So fill up your glass,
For life will soon pass;
When you're dead ye'll ne'er drink to your king or your lass!

Anacreon had a red nose, so they say;
But what's a red nose if ye're happy and gay?
Gad split me! I'd rather be red whilst I'm here,
Than white as a lily -and dead half a year!
So Betty my miss,
Come give me a kiss;
In hell there's no inkeeper's daughter like this!

Young Harry, propp'd up just as straight as he's able,
Will soon lose his wig and slip under the table,
But fill up your goblets and pass 'em around-
Better under the table than under the ground!
So revel and chaff
As ye thirstily quaff:
Under six feet of dirt 'tis less easy to laugh!

The fiend strike me blue! I'm scarce able to walk,
And damn me if I can't stand upright or talk!
Here, landlord, bid Betty to summon a chair;
I'll try home for a while, for my wife is not there!
So lend me a hand;
I'm not able to stand,
But I'm gay whilst I linger on top of the land!

rollerderbyportraits: Moxie McCmurder, the editor of Lead...

rollerderbyportraits:

Moxie McCmurder, the editor of Lead Jammer magazine is in Minnesota (seen here with the Fabulous Lorraine) - thanks to a glorious kickstarter effort. I’m in a taxi on my way to the airport - thanks to the same kickstarter - I’m continually impressed that I can wiggle my fingers in Philadelphia and half a world away, things happen. It’s the best sort of magic.

As soon as my plane lands I’m off to photograph the North Star Rollergirls, that goes from 2 until 6, then I’m crashing with friends / novelists Emma Bull and Will Shetterly then I get up tomorrow and do the whole thing again with the Minnesota Rollergirls.

This is a good life.

Be well everybody, my cab is at the airport.

Strong Rum & Strong Coffee

1 ounce aged white rum

2 ounces Black Blood of the Earth (in this case, Ethiopian)
1/4 ounce sugar cane syrup
4-5 dashes aromatic bitters (here I used Fee Bros.)

Mix rum, coffee, and syrup thoroughly, add ice and bitters, stir

Letting the drink sit for 5-10 minutes allows for full development of flavor.

Some Advice for Those Who Imbibe Strong Liquors

It seems that one Master Stross, in visiting with associates in the Colonies, was overtaken by strong drink & did suffer therefrom. In her wisdom, Mistress Spangenberg has provided some advice to prevent others from meeting a similar fate. I present them here in a form that may be printed, front & back, on common calling cards, with her kind permission.

Black Blood of the Earth - Funranium Labs

Bbote_unpacking_2012-01-28
Concentrated coffee goodness - this order was 1000 ml of Kona, 375 ml of Ethiopian. Annnd - new Molly Crabapple label for Funranium Labs, the Ineffable Goat of SCIENCE! The lethal combination of coffee, science, art (and a goat) finally pushed me to the point of no return, so I put in my order.

Bbote_experiment01
This is the first test of liquor and BBotE: 1 part Compass Box Orangerie and 3 parts Ethiopian. The evaporating alcohol seems to improve the transport of the oils in the coffee concentrate, and the coffee flavor masks the straight alcohol taste and brings the orange to the fore. Further experiments as they happen.
